Boston Marathon qualification

Information about qualifying at the WVV Marathon Würzburg and links to the Boston Athletic Association.

Qualification

Alongside the Olympic marathon, the Boston Marathon has one of the longest traditions of any running event worldwide and is one of the most important marathon events. The first race took place on 19 April 1897. Since then, it has been held annually on the third Monday in April, Patriots’ Day.

Participation in the Boston Marathon requires official proof of a qualifying time. This time must have been achieved and verified at a USATF- or AIMS-certified marathon event, over the full marathon distance.

The German source identifies the WVV Marathon Würzburg as one of the few marathon events in Germany recognised as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

The German source states that approximately 30,000 runners are admitted, while applications usually far exceed the available places. In that case, places are awarded to the fastest runners, so a good net time can be decisive.
